California Golf Club Of San Francisco, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in South San Francisco, California
The California Golf Club Of San Francisco moved to its present location in 1924. William Locke was hired to design the course.
When construction started in 1924, golf architect Arthur Vernon Macan was picked to oversee the course construction. It is not certain if Macan made any routing changes, but he deserves credit for the original greens, tees, and bunkering and shares credit as one of the two original designers of the course. The course first opened for play in 1926.
Macan's greenside bunkering and green contours were bold. However, his fairway bunkering was uninspired. It is thought that Macan planned to add dramatic fairway bunkers after play had commenced. The practice of studying play and then adding bunkers based on where divots were was not uncommon back in the 1920s.
In 1927 when it came time to address the fairway bunkers, the California Golf Club Of San Francisco again went with a different architect. The architect picked was Alister MacKenzie.
In the mid-1960s, the course needed refurbishing. They hired one of the best names in golf architecture, Robert Trent Jones Sr. for the work.
More recently, 2007, the golf course at The California Golf Club Of San Francisco has undergone an extensive extensive renovation by Kyle Philips (2007), to restore the course to the original Vernon Macan - Alister MacKenzie design.
This is a great course that winds through the hills of South San Francisco. At a slope of 136/139 from Front/Back, it is not an easy trek. The course is also fairly hilly. Since the complete course remodel, everyone must walk the first 6 holes unless you are handicapped. The course actually parallels the highway at one point, but the large and thick trees give the impression that you are deep in a wooded forest. Fairways and greens are typical of a country club in that they are in fantastic condition at all times of the year. California Golf Club Of San Francisco also has a nice driving range and a number of putting greens.
Depending on the time of year, fog and wind can become serious impediments to your game, especially later in the afternoon. Additionally, you should bring layered clothing. Weather in The San Francisco Bay area can change fairly dramatically over the course of several hours.

Very nice remodel, difficulty is underrated, very serene surroundings, just a pleasure to walk.
